SBRA Supports Demolition of Barry Building

The Barry Building –- the one-time home to Dutton’s Bookstore at 11973 San Vicente --- has been sitting unused and in a decrepit state for over ten years. It is a blight on our community.

The building is not seismically sound and cannot be brought up to current earthquake and ADA standards. Its current condition poses safety and crime risks --- unhoused individuals could camp out in the property and it has the potential for fires and vandalism.

SBRA supports demolition of this building so that someone can develop a new structure that will benefit the community.

If you would to send in a letter supporting demolition of the Barry Building, please contact us at info@southbrentwood.org and we will provide you with information on where to send in your comments

Mixed Use Project at Wilshire/Westgate

SBRA asked the Council Office and the City Planning Department to make changes to a proposed Mixed Use Project at 11905 Wilshire. The 7-story project will house ~80 apartment units, some retail space, and 160 bike parking spaces that reduce its vehicle parking requirements.

Our requests, which we think should apply to all projects on Wilshire, included:

  • Compliance with West Wilshire Community Design Overlay – The WWCDO requires street trees, landscaping, and architectural elements for all new projects that make Wilshire Blvd. west of the 405 more attractive and pedestrian-friendly for residents, workers, and transit riders.

  • Additional landscaping and trees – We requested street trees in line with the WWCDO and asked that these be outside of the building on the street instead of on the roof as the applicant proposed.

  • Alley repaving – We asked for the Applicant to repave the alley behind the project, which is already in bad shape.

  • Privacy plan – We believe that projects should be designed so that they don’t stare directly into the windows of existing residences, with proper elevation relative to adjacent buildings and screening elements. We requested a privacy plan.

Ultimately our requests were not incorporated into this project, but we will continue to push to improve future projects in this corridor.

Thank you to all of our sponsors!
